While the idea of transporting gold bullion in a clearly marked railroad car - with opening window doors for easy access - is nothing short of preposterous, it does make for a fun carload and an interesting conversation piece. Perhaps it's no coincidence that Lionelr marketed the first of the mint cars, boldly lettered "Fort Knox Gold Reserve," in 1961, just as Timothy Leary was beginning to popularize psychedelic mushrooms.
